Surfing in the south of Portugal – everything you need to know from places to stay to surfspots and board rental in the Algarve.
Remember my first article where I write about how I started surfing in San Sebastian? Well the lovely english girl from that story joined me on a little reunion surftrip four years later to a girls surf trip. As we booked everything very spontaneous, we even could check weather and wave forecasts and decide accordingly where to go. The Algarve looked quite pleasing in terms of weather and waves so we locked it down as our destination.
Standing waves and wave parks. How to improve your surfing and get rid of that landlocked feeling.
Surfing is riddled with challenges: cold water, rocks, crowds and fluctuating conditions that amalgamate to form a frustrating and sometimes dangerous experience. We dedicate many hours for a precious few seconds actually spent on riding a wave. The standing wave concept totally removes these hurdles and strips the experience down to simply riding the wave. It allows you to train your balance, turns and at some level even tricks on a stable wave.
How I started surfing and why it changed my life.
About five years ago, work, university and my self employement duties were quite a heavy weight on my shoulders. In that very moment I wanted nothing more, than leave everything behind for a moment and just breathe. I ended up booking a very spontaneous trip to San Sebastian, a picturesque little coastal town in the basque autonomous community, to visit a lovely friend during her language exchange. I did not know this trip was the beginning of an exciting adventure called surfing.
